Mahatzit Ha-Shekel Charity Box
Copyright c 2000 by Oded Davidson

Silver, engraved, cut, lattice, soldered, pressed, cast,
Oval shaped charity box with lattice worked front and back piece. The illustrations represent the mitzvah of   "mahatzit ha-shekel"  the coin given once a year by bnei-Israel to the temple. The purpose of the coins was not just to cover the upkeep expenses of the temple but also to count the population without harm coming to them, counting them outright being forbidden. The hebrew word "Tdakah" "charity" is cut-out along the top of the front and back pieces.
